6 Tips to Keep Your Camera Lens Clean!
Tuesday, 18 September 2007

Dirt on your DSLR lens is one of the main factors that reduces the image quality of your photos. Although some defects caused by small spots may be repairable in post processing, larger dirts most probably will probably make your photo useless. Even a tiny stain that you haven’t noticed or ignored during the shoot out can ruin hours of hard work at the end of the day. The most important fact that you have to consider before cleaning your lens is to choose a proper method to make sure you don’t scratch your lens surface.

Here we present 6 tips for you to effectively clean (and keep clean) your DSLR lens without giving any damage to it. Remember most of these methods presented here are also applicable to compact digicam and other kind of optical devices:

1 - Use a UV (Ultraviolet) Filter

This relatively cheap filter is a perfect protection for your valuable lens, both from dirt and other impacts. You will be cleaning the filter, thus minimizing the risk of scratching the actual lens surface. We recommend you to keep this filter attached all times, but remember to choose a high quality one otherwise it may degrade the quality of the output image. Since different lenses may have different filter diameters, you may have to purchase one for each of your lens. One more tip: don't go for the cheapest filters, they may degrade the image quality significantly, go for the multi coated glass filter if you can afford.

Here is what I use: Hoya 77mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter (There is a big discount at the moment)

2- Use lens hoods, and lens caps for both front and back end of your lens:

Nikon D3 Official Sample Photos Released
Sunday, 16 September 2007

Nikon finally released the official D3 sample photos, ISO ranging from 200 to 6400. Low light performance of this beast was what everybody was waiting for, as that will be the decisive factor for many pro photographers. As we have seen from the sample photos, high ISO image quality of Nikon D3 is stunning. New full frame CMOS sensor of D3 seems to be working very well.

All sample D3 photos are taken with AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm F2.8G ED except one which is taken with Ai AF NIKKOR 85 mm F1.4D.

Canon EOS 5D MkII Rumours
Friday, 14 September 2007

Introduced in August of 2005, Canon EOS 5D has been the "budget" full frame DSLR with its astounding image quality and high ISO performance, even outperforming the 16.7 MP flagship of Canon: EOS 1Ds MarkII in means of image quality according to some photographers.

Now EOS 5D is already 2 years old and the competition is getting stronger, especially with the new full frame introduced by Nikon: D3. So as many agree, 5D is due to upgrade very soon. The new name is likely to be EOS 5D Mark II, altough it is not out of possibility that Canon may name the new as a new series like 3D or 7D.

The photo below is claimed to be the new Canon EOS 5D Mark ii, although we can not confirm if this is real or not since we came across several 'photoshopped' images before:

Free Software: Photo Filtre
Thursday, 13 September 2007

If you are a non-pro photographer who don’t need the most advanced features of professional image editing softwares and don’t want to pay hundred of $ for things that you will never use, then Photo Filtre is what you are looking for. Photo Filtre is a complete image editing program which allows you adjust your photos (Brightness, contrast, dyed, saturation, gamma correction ...) and apply a vast range of filters (more then 100 filters), which in my opinion would easily fulfill all the requirements of an average photographer, and it is completely free.

Another advantage of this software is that it requires very small disk space (only 1.6 MB) and is quite fast. As an example, the time it takes me to start Photo Filter, open one of my photos, adding saturation, and saving is less then the start up time of Photoshop CS3. If you are familiar with any kind of photo editinf software, you won’t have any difficulty getting used to it.

Other functions of Photo Filtre: Image browser, adding frames to photos, Plug-in management, Transparency management for GIF images and exporting them to icons, advanced text effects, several types of contours and textures, Blending and assembling of images. There is also an Automatisation module which allows users to apply basic functions/corrections (conversion, image size, framing) to a group of images.
